Assessment 2 - Current Issues - Brad Savage.

Influence of the media in sport

Influence of T.V in football

T.V influences football in many different ways. For example, T.V changes the times that football is played . Traditionally, games were played at 3pm on a Saturday and 7.30pm on Wednesday. To make watching the game on T.V better, the times have been changed so then you can watch multiple game one after another. For example one game is played at 1pm then another is played 4pm.
T.V influences football making players being perceived as good or bad. Because people are watching games on T.V, and also watching replays and pundits talk about players, if a player is in a replay of a show then everybody on T.V watches this. This means that people will perceive players to be famous or to be complete idiots because T.V allows us to watch things like match of the day.
T.V influences football by bringing money into football leagues, and allot of it. It is mainly brought in via the premier league because it is the highest standard of football in the U.K, so people will pay lot's off money to watch a high end game in the comfort of their home. People like BT sports and sky sports provide many games and charge money, and some of it goes to the premier league. All this money goes into improving leagues like getting better sponsors, improving cup matches and getting more people to watch football in England.
Goal line technology is one of the largest influences of football via T.V. If it wasn't for televisions then people wouldn't know if a ball that was near the goal crossed the line. When people watched the game and seen that the goal was actually in on the replay, it causes huge dispute in the world of football. T.V has allowed the FA to see a massive flaw in their refereeing system. So T.V has opened the FA's mind to new rules and different ways to solve disputes.

Influence of sponsorship in football

Sponsorship's bring a huge amount of money to football. Without sponsorship's, football probably wouldn't be the same game it is today. When a club gets a sponsorship, they have to wear and advertise there logo and they will get money in return. Sponsorship's influence  football because it allows the footballs teams to gain more money. This means that they will get more money to make bigger transfer deals when the window is open so then they make bigger news.
Sponsorship's allows certain clubs with a higher status to have electronic billboards around the ground which has a way that football is influenced. Electronic billboards allow opportunities for football teams to make money, this influences the way that football is played. It makes more money for the club which allows bigger transfers to happen, and clubs will have more money which will attract the bigger players which will cause new stories.
Sponsorship's influence the names that stadiums and teams have. For example The Etihad Stadium is influenced by Etihad. Manchester city gain masses of money because of the name of the stadium which helps them in the transfer windows, building new training facility's etc. If it wasn't for these sponsorship, teams wouldn't earn as much money and it could affect the club in financial terms and the team could go into debt.
Sponsorship's don't just sponsor teams, but also individual players. This has a huge impact off the football world and the players lives. For example if individual players didn't have sponsorship's they wouldn't earn as much money and would probably influence them to move to another team to earn more money. If this was a huge player like Messi, Yaya Toure for example it can effect were clubs finish in the league and determine what players they can buy.

Influence of national press in football

National press in my opinion is the biggest influence on football in the U.K. Firstly, the national press sensationalize about everything to try and make a story out of it. For example, sky sports follow everything that Joey Barton does because they think everything he does is funny and stupid. They just blow everything out of porpotion and he is seen as a negative player because of this but the press don't seem to capture any of the positive things that he brings to football. Every story about a footballer is sensationalized so then a story can be made. It influences the players performance on the pitch and can have either a positive or negative affect on them.
The national press influence players performance in a negative and annoying way by printing rumors in the paper as if they are the truth. This annoys the players because they know deep down that the story that they have read about them isn't true, but just a rumor. This can influence the players performance because spectators can makes chants about them and sing about it in a game, and make a player loose concentration and have a bad performance.
The national press have a huge influence in what spectators and viewers of football think of the players. If you see something in the Sun for example; millions off people if the U.K will read it and everyone will have a view on that person because off the story that has been put in the paper, when really all spectators do is read it, they weren't  actually there ans the press don't tell the full story. This can affect the player mind set, if they get annoyed then they can have argument's with staff at the club they are at then get a transfer because off this and has a huge influence on the world off football.
The national press also influence the different sexes in football. For example you never see women's football making the front pages off newspapers. This is because the national press just target men's football because more happens in it, for example more incident's on the pitch like fights and confrontations. This means that the newspapers have more to write about.

The Daily Mirror has a great back page today, with the headline shouting '£105,000,000- The most expensive player in history'balo

Influence of the internet in football

The Internet tends to influence clubs in a negative way. For example on the internet you can get live streams off matches online that you don't have to pay for which is illegal, but millions off people do it. This means that clubs won't get any money because the people are buying tickets to watch a game which means that they loose money and won't be able to keep players wages up, pay for better training facility's etc.
Internet also influences the everyday life off football players on the internet. For example, football players use twitter to communicate with other players and celebrities, which can have an impact on their lives. For example Joey Barton has been in various arguments on twitter, which hasn't affected the way he has played but the way he is perceived. This means that his manager may have views on him because he is a bit off an idiot and could affect the future of him at his current club.
Internet allows people to bet in play on the internet which influences not the way the game is played but the spectating. For instance if you loose a bet then the spectators can get annoyed which can cause various fights because off this. Also though this can add an extra edge to the fans because they can bet in play so they see the teams performing meaning that they have a higher edge in interpreting there performance and determining who will win.
People can now check the scores online which you never could do before until in the last 5 or 6 years. Potentially this could loose football clubs money because it doesn't cost money to check the score online and watch replay's, so people will just check online if they don't want to go to the game, which can loose money for clubs.

Influence of rule changes in football

There have been many changes in modern football due to the way the game is played and viewed. One of them is the pass back rule, which means that if the ball is passed back to the goal keeper intentionally, he can not handle the ball with anything but his feet, if so an indirect free kick is awarded. This had influenced football a lot because there had been lots of controversy about the pass back rule, and many people are unsure what it is. Many goalkeepers have made the mistake and it has cost them the game for no reason.
Yellow and red cards have changed the game massively! If a challenge was a yellow card ten years ago, right now it would probably be a straight red with a hefty fine or match ban to comply to. The way referees distribute the cards has changed, because of the competitive nature of the game, the game can get that competitive now that challenges can get very dirty. Also the referees go through advanced training now to see weather the tackle was intentional or not. This has influenced football because players have to be more careful when playing the game or they could risk bans and fines.
The offside rule influences football lot's. In every other game off football, there is a goal that is offside or a player in onside then scores and it gets called off. The FA don't agree with video replays to make the decisions so it can change games. If one wrong call is made from a lineman's, it can possibly change the outcome of the game in numerous ways; they could get abuse off spectators, complaints from managers and in general make the game more unpleasant to play.
The way substitutes can be managed have made a slight impact on the game. Managers can now have a wider selection off players because 7 players are allowed on the bench instead off 5, which means managers can have more variation on the bench because off injury's or people playing bad. It also makes the game more tactical because oppositions can't expect what pair of fresh legs come on the pitch and the team could completely change tactics because of this and disguise it well.

Influence of clothing in football

Clothing has had a huge influence on the performance off footballers. Firstly, boots have had an influence on footballers. 30 years ago boots were made out off leather. They were heavy and had no real appeal about them, you had to drag your feet and they were harder to move than they are today. Now days, boots are made lighter and have more padding in them so you can use your foot as a cushion when receiving the ball. Having better boots has increased performance of most footballers and brought in significant income to sponsors.
Secondly, clothing as in actual tops that we wear has had an effect on football. Yet again 30 years ago football shirts were just made off cotton. They were very heavy, trapped sweat in them and increased the temperature off a footballer. With the modern tops they are made off smart fabrics which release the sweat. They are also very light and keep you cool. Statistically, they can lower your heart rate while at peak by 2-4 bpm which slightly improves performance.
Modern day football has made football clothing way more expensive, which many people complain about. It's fine for footballers, but they have the money. This is one of the negative sides to modern clothing; the expense. Some people may not be able to afford the best clothing, meaning that some people will get slight advantages over other people because of this. At grass root level this is a problem. Even though the people who produce the shirts gain significant profit, even supporters can't afford the football shirts sometimes. This means that the game is played differently at a lower level, and people like FIFA and the FA do not like this.

Influence of personal equipment in football

Personal equipment has had an influence on football. Firstly, equipment like shin pads have been significantly changed over the past 10 years. They used to be very heavy, and filled the whole of your shin. Players found them uncomfortable, but they offered the protection they needed. In modern day football, shin pads have been made lighter and offer less protection. This has influenced football because it can potentially make player more injury prone due to the amount of protection it gives. They barley cover any of the shin.
Goalkeeper gloves had changed a lot over the past 10 years, and have influenced the performance of goalkeepers. They are made with extra padding around the finger tips, so you can make finger tips save. They are also made so you have more grip on the ball when you are changeling the ball. They have extra padding on the main part so then the ball doesn't repulse. This has influenced football because it has made goalkeepers save goals that they wouldn't off without them, therefore making it harder to score a goal past them.
Under armors have slightly influenced football. Back 10 years ago or so, there was no such thing as an under armor, now footballers wear them everyday to keep them warm. Under armors have now been developed to keep sweat out, but keep the heat in your body. You also don't get as wet and cold. This has influenced football because it has slightly increased performance by increasing body temperature when it's cold. This allows a greater range of movement and keeps muscles warm so you are ready when you are needed.

Influence of cameras in football

Cameras have had a huge influence on the way spectators view football. In modern football, cameras allow digital replays which didn't happen until 10 years ago. Now, shows like match of the day allow replays so people would rather watch the replays than actually go to the match. Because it shows the main highlights, they won't be bored watching the whole game if they don't want to. This has influenced football because now people will watch free replays, so they won't be to see the watch which reduces the amount off income that club's will get.
New cameras can now record with more pixels, meaning that people can watch a game of football in high definition. This also means that the cameras can take more frames per second so it makes watching football gamed better and smoother. People would rather watch it on TV because they stay warm, and watch it as clear as there own eye sight from home. This means that people can save money from watching it at home. This means that football clubs loose money because people would rather watch a game on TV.
Cameras have got more advanced because more cameras are being placed are stadiums when playing games, which means that you can watch the game from more than one camera angle. This is better because  when you watch the game in the stadium, you only get the game from one angle. This means that football clubs will loose money because it is better to watch the game on T.V.

Influence of analysis in football

Analysis has heavily influenced the world off football. Analysis allows people to have opinions on players because off replays. This means that people who watch shows based around analysis will get views on players because people will listen and watch pundits. This influences football because other people will watch how players perform, meaning that managers will watch how the perform with out wasting there time, meaning that managers can make decisions on what players to sign.
Analysis influences football because it gives the media something to write about. When players get analysed, the media will write about it because then they have a story to write about. It tends to be negative because when a player plays bad, then the media have a good story and people will buy the newspapers. This has influenced football because players can read what other people perceive of them; meaning that they can tell how they are performing.
